I watched @Mithzan playthis game and I feel in love with it immediately! I really want to play this game (i only have a chrome computer) and would love to see the endings to this. This game is the best roleplay?novel game I've ever seen (besides Undertale to). This game looks Astounding! I'd love to play this game \(>ᗜ>)/

The Shadows That Run Alongside The Car is a Visual Novel about two apocalypse survivors trying to find a safe haven. I'd say it's more about the journey than the destination it's really curious. Here's my impression of the game: https://youtu.be/HlGsv-udvyE

Honestly...I went into this not expecting much and giving up right away but I got hooked instantly! Very nicely done! I can't wait to finish up all the endings.

I loved this game so much, I fell in love with the characters and the art style and just everything about it! You can watch me play it here if you want to >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHMq7vvWRL0&list=PLa3q6V6i4ONYEBgX6JKhA0jJKz8tnkIOD

I love this. The concept is so simple but so complex. It's two strangers in the apocalypse talking in a car, but it's so much more than that. While I do wish it was longer, I love the endings as they are very open-ended and let the reader decide what happened after the ending. It interacts with the audience by not giving them a solid finale, and I say kudos for that. To create such a powerful game in only four days? Incredible. Words can't describe what I'm feeling right now.

Job well done. Highly anticipating your next game, if you are going to make another. :~)

umm how do i download this on windows cause it dosen't let me for some weird reason

Hi, we're going to need a bit more detail than that to solve your problem, but do check your antivirus software to make sure it's not flagging the game as harmful and blocking it. I know Avast, for example, likes to do that with Ren'Py games, unfortunately...

Hi! I was just wondering how to open this on mac? It just downloads a zip file, and I may be being dumb about this, but it just looks so good and I have no idea how to play it, thank you!

After you download the .zip file, simply extract it somewhere. Inside the folder (which should be called Shadows-1.0-all) there will be various files that allow you to run the game regardless of whether you're on Mac, Windows, or Linux. If you're on Windows, double click Shadows.exe. On Mac, it's Shadows.app, etc etc.

Thank you so much! x

There doesn't seem to be a Shadows.app when I download and extract the zip file, only a Shadows.exe :( Any suggestions?

The .app extension probably won't be there when you're looking at the folder on a Mac, so look for the file simply called "Shadows" that has the special game icon.

Oh I figured it out! Thanks so much it's a great game!

Just wanna say: I really liked the game, you can really tell it was made with love :) The characters feel soo relatable in a way, it's awesome :)

I wanted to ask? What was this made on?

If you mean the game engine, we used Ren'Py!

ok thanks :3

I love the music, if you composed it, could you please share the sheets? If not, could you direct me to where I could find them?

I love the soundtrack too but I found nothing about it, so I got them by ear. You have to tune the guitar like the E chord, hope it helps you :D

Hi there!

Both of the songs used in the game are royalty-free tracks from Music for Makers. The tracks are Persevere and Broken. Unfortunately, they are on the pricey side if you want to purchase them since they're royalty-free tracks... The versions used in the game are actually shorter because Music for Makers does this thing where they send out free "sample" tracks every week and we used those free tracks for the game.

Thank you so much for your interest and support!

I need help i dont know how to install this please help

This game hurt my soul. I was at a loss for words at the end of both endings. I am now deeply sad. Y'all created a beautiful game/VN. Watch me suffer here, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxtIMWjRAH4&feature=youtu.be

Awesome game, can feel the passion behind the characters. I done a play through of one of the story lines. You can find it here. Thanks for making such a great game and within that period of time. Your crew done an excellent job. Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing with us.

Whenever I try to run the game, nothing happens. Is there something wrong with the download or is my computer weak or...?

Thanks! I actually got it running. It just takes a really long time to start up the program. Cool stuff. Very nice take on zombie lore.

I discovered that not everyone knows about the bad ending! I'll leave this video here so if anyone would like to see it, take a look. This game is wonderful. To the Developers, thank you once again :)

Hello! I finally got it to work and I enjoyed the game really much!! The graphic and the story is very beautiful!! Thank you so much for create the game! <3

This game was amazingly beautiful. It's so freaking realistic, I can seriously see this happening should the world ever come to this. The focus dedicated to the two characters, rather than the whole world around them was perfect. As always you guys blew me away with your rich storylines and great artwork.

Lovely, understated, subtle. I look forward to more from Lox Rain.

And thanks for supporting Linux!

I really enjoy this visual novel. Played through the male's story first, then through the female's story. Thank you for this novel.

I must say that this game is in my top 5 graphic novels, its awesome how you can relate to the characters so well, and i must admit the things they said made me think a lot how you view the world. Also the choice of music was wonderful, and i must ask the names of the songs because i fell in love with them and i cant seem to find them on the internet. Thank you for making this wonderful game!

This little Visual Novel is definitely one of the best I've read in awhile and has earned a place on my top 10. It's short but very well done. I just wish it was a bit longer, but other than that extremely well done.

I never thought my favorite game could be an internet flash game, but it is now. This game is the deepest game I've ever played, and I've played a lot of games. This by far will take spot for the best, and to the devs, thank you, for the great experience.

i just watched a video (albeit a glitchy one) so I'm gonna play the game for myself, but I heard the music and it was amazing :D would be awesome if there was a way you could get the soundtrack without running the game (I have learned doing that is very distracting when trying to get things done or trying to go to sleep. "Just 10 more minutes", he lied.)

Beautiful little story. The things the characters say and think; the insecurities, the weariness, the two bonded but it wasn't anything over the top and felt very appropriate given the situation. Loved it.

(1 edit) (+1)

The train of thoughts was believable and relatable. Nothing was forced. The mood setting, the art-style, the music - or rather just melodies - that all was great and I loved every bit of it. I only wish it was a little longer. Not that it was bad, no not at all, I just simply wanted to spend more time with the characters. Guess I'll have to play it again.
I also like the open ending, not love, but like. Open endings are bittersweet to me and I have this love/hate kind of relationship with them. Still I think it was a right way to finish the game - to leave the rest of the story up to the player.

So I just wanted to thank you for making this. Even though it made me a little bit more sad than I had expected, it also gave me a lot to think about and that I am truly grateful.
And I am really sorry for not donating, I really don't own any cards or bank accounts in that matter... But I'll make sure more people know about this game. It is really good and it deserves more attention.

P.S.: Hopefully you'll understand what I had meant. My English isn't really all that good for describing my complicated feelings.

I loved this game so much, characters are so relatable and listening to them makes you think about so many things, it makes you seriously doubt what are you doing with your life, and if the world were to end would you be happy with what your life was, or would you continue getting by just as you have for years. I sincerely want to apologize to the creator for not paying for this game, I literally have no way of paying and I feel somehow guilty for getting such an experience for free

This looks like a very interesting game! But I can't open it. I don't know if it is my computer's problem or the game's. I'm in a MacBook

If you're getting security errors when you try to open the game, try right-clicking/ctrl-clicking on the game file, and then agree that you want to open it. Mac security tends to get suspicious of a lot of games downloaded from itch.io.

I just wrote an entire review and I lost it goddammit. Oh well.

I honestly have no clue where to even start describing how I felt while playing this game, and I fancy myself a writer, so that's huge! It was such a surreal, heart-wrenching and somehow strangely fulfilling ordeal, and I have to say I enjoyed every second of it. I'm gonna start off with how gorgeous the music was. It set the mood right from the beginning, and I just knew that this wouldn't be just any old zombie apocalypse-themed game. It was thought-provoking, tragic, and even somewhat darkly comical at times, and I loved it! Kudos for bringing up a whole new side to the old zombie trope.

Anyways, I loved how we could name both the main characters --nice touch! I can honestly say that I've never enjoyed two characters so much. They were both unique, and their interaction was very surreal, and wonderful to watch. They were so different, but similar as well. Their dialogue complemented their personalities very well, and I felt like I was watching a short film. It was amazing how the game wasn't riddled with a lot of description, and how Shelby and Dustin were brought to life with just their interaction. I loved them!

Also, the art is just gorgeous! Their expressions were just great to watch, and I loved the time progression --very realistic. I have no clue how you managed to create something so magnificent in just four days! It's just astounding, to be honest. And the amount of thought and care gone into this game is very apparent. The writing was amazing as well, and none of the description or dialogue felt out of place.

I was enraptured by the mood of the game, and the self-deprecating nature of the characters just added to the overall.....deadened, sort of 'it's the end of the world so why bother' kinda atmosphere. I was caught up in the game from start to finish, and my jaw was on the floor with every unexpected turn, and every heart-wrenching moment (and boy, were there many). I just really love this game, and it's strangely serene for a story set in a zombie apocalypse. It makes you feel, and it makes you question a lot of things, and I don't think anyone will be able to finish the game and just sit there without thinking of some of the questions it posed. However, I kinda wish that there was a concrete ending, but then again, the open-ending contributed to the hopeless feeling that was laced throughout the story.

I just really love this, okay?

And if "Shadows" was this good, I can't wait to see anything else you create! Honestly really want to write a fanfic based on this, and I'm Impatiently looking forward for more games from you! Now i'm gonna go bug everyone I know to play this!

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughts! It really means a lot to us to know that people genuinely felt something from our little game, honestly :D

(And believe me, we're just as astounded that we pulled this thing off in four days! It was kind of miraculous)

Thanks so much for playing! We're really glad that you enjoyed it. (And thanks so much for sharing it with others!)

There's no 'canon' name for the characters, but we usually refer to them by their default names, Shelby and Dustin.

This game is so nostalgic and serene. I absolutely love the artwork and the slight changes in the lighting. Though it was short, it got me thinking about some deep stuff. I enjoyed it and will be sure to check out other endings online.

This game was dope. It really does have you thinking about the end of the world and how people would react to such circumstances. I played both male and female perspective and it's difficult for me to put it into words.

I just finished playing both routes. This game combined with the somber soundtrack feels like taking a stroll outside in a place you'll never be able to come back to. I don't really know how to describe it, but the lingering sense of hopelessness brought these characters together very nicely. It definitely gave me a lot to think about. I think it was paced pretty well, too.

I'm sending this game to a couple friends; hopefully they'll take it slow as I did and get to experience what the story for what it really is. c:

This was amazing... I was disapointed when it ended how it did, but it was amazing.
